Where stories transform lives

One of my favourite charities is MAD About Art.  They work with kids in South Africa, using a unique mixture of art and narrative therapy "to increase children’s knowledge of HIV and AIDS and create more open communication as well as reduce risk-taking behaviour by increasing self-esteem and self-advocacy."  You can see some of the amazing art work that the kids have created at their website, alongside the "hero books" that they have produced.  These are stories that have the power to move – us – and to transform the lives of those who have found the courage to tell them.  As one of their young youth ambassadors writes:

"I am the hero of my book.  I have my dreams."

If you’d like to support their work you’ll find out more on their site – or you can sponsor their contribution to the Walk for Life event by clicking here.

Art is powerful and I’m glad these children have spoken to us through this tool. Recently in a mall nearby, art from African children was on display.

A picture can say something in 1,000 words and it’s a powerful tool to tell a story. I value art as I do writing.

    Thanks for sharing, Joanna.
