Who’s telling your story?

I stumbled upon a wonderful post the other day.  (Any of you using Stumble Upon?  I’ve only just started using it but already discovered some gems.  I love the way it allows us to make unexpected connections, like this one).

It was from the Miscellaneous Adventures of an Aussie Mum.  And there in the midst of her miscellaneous adventures she throws us a big question: Who is narrating your life?

It’s the question we ask when we realise we’ve lost the plot.  The feeling so many of us get when the story comes to a dead end.  What happens to people when they

…wake up when they’re forty and go, “Wow, how did I end up here?” and realise they’ve had an unfulfilled previous twenty or so years because they’ve never actively narrated their destiny. It was easier to “go with the flow”, when really that flow was a rip taking them out to sea.

And when you stop, and look around you, and see how far you’ve come or how far you’ve drifted, maybe… what’s your answer to the question:

Who’s narrating your life? Who’s telling your story?

  1. One should be telling one’s own story.

BTW, “Stumble Upon” is pretty good isn’t it.

  2. For me, I belive that if a life is worth living it’s worth recording. I was inspired 10 years ago by the audio diary of British MP Tony Benn. Ever since I have recorded my day. I stared on tape, then a dictafone and now an MP3 player. My children even get involved now in the “daddy news”.!

    Hi Scott

Thanks for calling by. The recording project sounds interesting. I was wondering how you use the material after you’ve recorded it – do you go back and check in on things later to remind yourself of thoughts, ideas etc, or do you have a long term plan for turning it into something new?

PS My admiration for Tony Benn (as well as his willingness to speak up and speak out for his beliefs) was the amount of tea he consumes. I’ve tried hard over the years to follow suit, but never really come close…
